Testimonials
To give you an idea about the way I practice, here are testimonials from clients who see me in individual, marital, and group therapy. Please note that I respect confidentiality so names and identifying data are not revealed.
First Couple: Dr. Houck is the fourth therapist I've worked with, the third for my husband. We came to him for help with childhood sexual abuse and family related-issues that were negatively impacting our life. It was causing a large amount of stress and strain on our marriage and personal relationships. For months, we hesitated to try another therapist because none of those we had worked with individually in the past seemed to help. They barely scratched the surface on our issues, but rather sat passively and just listened to us talk, nodding their heads. (Many times we asked more thought-provoking questions and raised more poignant theories they did!)
We have been seeing Dr. Houck together for 9 months and are so glad to have found him. We find his unique approach to patient therapy (blending proven psychological principles and clinical findings with scripture and spiritual teachings) to be very enlightening and valuable, often inspiring. Dr. Houck is extremely knowledgeable, insightful and patient. He provokes thought and self-discovery at every opportunity, promotes forgiveness (of the self and others), and invites us to see things in a different way (which he says is a miracle). When we talk, Dr. Houck listens intently for clues and cues into our childhood and mindset, then digs to uncover issues, triggers and fears deeply rooted in the subconscious. He works with us to help us to raise our awareness and understanding of the problem, to make the unconscious conscious.
The complex and deeply rooted web of issues Dr. Houck has uncovered that impacts the way my husband and I see and approach every relationship, situation, interaction, problem, etc. is unimaginable. With his help, we are healing our childhood wounds and becoming whole. In the process, we are learning to understand each other better, communicate more effectively (with one another and with other people), rebuild broken familial relationships, and take more control of our lives. We're getting much more than we sought out or hoped for.
Second Couple: We were confronted with what seemed a 'personal crisis' of sexual addiction for one of us.
In our 2 years of therapy, Dr. Houck not only urged our participation in 12 step programs, but helped us to see our defects and deficiencies in communication with each other and the world in general.
During the counseling process, we gained awareness of what we can control, what we cannot control, and how to accept and forgive. Our self esteem increased as we sought recovery.
Clarity and balance are now strong components of our lives. We are equipped to face the joys and pains of life in a much more healthy, functional way. We also know that the tools we have acquired with Dr. Houck's help, will be used often and for the rest of our lives! We finally feel free of the isolation that plagued both of us in the past, and are appreciating our newfound awareness of our connection to the universe...
Third Couple: My wife and I started seeing Dr. Houck when we first started dating in 1989. I had been in a couple of unsuccessful marriages, and my (future) wife had been in some unsuccessful relationships as well. We wanted to avoid some of the issues that had gotten us into trouble in the past. I was also a recovering alcoholic, and this would be my first serious relationship since I started my recovery. I felt I was on shaky ground. Dr. Houck was able to help me with every personal issue I encountered, and help us with every relationship issue we encountered.
We eventually married in late 1990, and Dr./Rev. Houck officiated at our wedding. We continued meeting with Dr. Houck in a couples group, for a number of years. The work that Dr. Houck has done with us over the years is invaluable. We recently celebrated our 18th anniversary, and although we don't see Dr. Houck on a regular basis anymore, we know that we can always call for help if we get stuck. Dr. Houck knows us and our issues so well that he can help us get to the core issue in a hurry. In addition, I will soon be celebrating my 28th year of sobriety. Without Dr. Houck's help I seriously doubt that I would have made such tremendous progress.
